Focus Groups

Dr. Engelberg has been designing and moderating focus groups for over 20 years for numerous public sector organizations, non-profits, as well as corporations. Our guiding principles in this work are: 1) Let the business objectives drive the methodology, not vice-versa. 2) Focus and prioritize your information needs. 3) Determine what participants to recruit and what questions to ask them based on your objectives and information needs. 4) Recognize that no one in your organization wants "data" - they want answers to guide specific actions and decisions. 5) Justify your focus group project with clear and reasonable expectations for a solid return on your investment. "I've been in market research for 20 years. Moshe is an excellent moderator and creative thinker. It is a pleasure to work with him."

Chris Koepke, Ph.D.
Deputy Director
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

"Did an excellent job running the focus groups - using info from the focus groups where we could take action."

Winnie O. Willis, M.D.
SDSU
Black Infant Health Project

We've conducted focus groups to understand market dynamics and new business opportunities, to take the "pulse" of customers and clients, to determine and test positioning and branding strategies, to create campaign concepts and messages, to provide management with the voice of their many constituencies, etc. Along the way we've designed unique approaches to conducting focus groups including projective techniques and "magic wand" scenarios, and we've creating hybrid methodologies for many clients, including product testing for Braun Thermoscan and LG Electronics, and Q Methodology research for CMS (the Medicare agency), the U.S. Marine Corps, and AARP.

Additionally, Dr. Engelberg conducts customized Focus Group Moderating Skills Workshops and has trained scores of professionals dealing with diverse issues and populations in the "how-tos" of focus group management and advanced moderating skills.

"Thanks again for moderating the groups and getting us the information we required. As usual you did an outstanding job. Hope to work with you again in the future."

"He is better at doing what he does than anyone I know."

Vincent Felliti, M.D.
